1. Extended reality
What does extended reality encompass? It includes virtual reality, augmented reality and a recent addition: the M word. Yes, we are talking about the Metaverse! These three technologies are already changing our lives and our consumption patterns; they will continue to develop in 2022.
An evolution that will have an impact, notably on design: 2D, used on our phone or computer screens, will gradually give way to 3D. This promises a better immersion and an even easier way to connect and interact with your entourage, wherever they are in the world.
The implications of extended reality are not just for fun: the medical world and research should also benefit from it. As teleconsultations grow in use, it will soon be more convenient for doctors to accompany their patients. Thanks to augmented reality and 3D vision, you can remotely study a product or a situation from all angles!
It should be noted that some large companies are already using these technologies to allow their users to have a visualization of their products in 3D.
2. Artificial intelligence
The general term “artificial intelligence” refers to all types of computer-generated intelligence. Today, the so-called “low intelligence” AIs predominate. Like voice assistants, they focus on a single task. However, there is no doubt that the trend is growing and that we will soon be able to produce more human-like AIs. Why is this trend interesting for UX?
It is believed that the advancement of this technology will soon allow for the generation of basic wireframes and AI pre-tests before launching user studies with humans. However, UX specialists can rest assured that AI is not about to take over from humans, who have never been so important!
3. The Metaverse
This was the bomb dropped at the end of 2021 and it deserved a category of its own. Although there is still no clear definition as to what it is, or what it will be, most specialists agree on one point. Namely, that the metaverse encompasses all AI and augmented reality developments.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, it would be interconnected virtual spaces, connected to the real world and allowing to make the human presence in these areas more tangible than it is currently.
Imagine attending a concert in space from your couch and, a few moments later, being immersed underwater. Or walking in Japan while you are on the other side of the world.
Note that Meta (formerly Facebook) is not the only company interested in this, and it is likely to become a hot topic in 2022.
4. Data visualization
Visualizing data through facts is not new, but it is becoming increasingly important. Abstract information has no place in a decent communication in 2022. Today, you have to illustrate facts and make these data attractive to the reader!
Remember, however, that their attention span is limited, so you need to prioritize and make this information both interesting and entertaining. This not only helps to get a clear message across, but also to keep the user’s attention.
Be careful not to drown your reader in a flood of boring data: it must be simplified. Your visitors do not have time to decipher complicated information. So opt for tables, graphs, illustrations or static or interactive infographics.
5. Mixed UX research methods
Here we have an emerging trend of 2021 that should logically continue to grow in 2022: the mix of UX research methods.
Over the past two years, we have noticed an evolution in our clients’ demands: they are increasingly looking to mix the qualitative and quantitative methods. While the quantitative approach provides clear and quantified data, the qualitative approach deciphers user behavior. A mix of techniques that considers the whole situation and gives a global vision, no longer fragmented.
In UX, this translates into a better understanding of the users and their actions in relation to a product, but also into a better definition of personas.
Multiple researches can be implemented at all stages of product or service development. You will be able to understand where, what, how, and why your users would be interested in what you offer. You will then have everything you need to build a deep and solid relationship of trust with them!
There are multiple benefits to mixing methods:
- better targeting of the popular products
- better targeting of the ideal client
- better product improvements
- cost reduction: by immediately targeting all the good practices to be implemented thanks to qual/quant, you will not have to come back to the product once it is put on sale
6. Ecodesign
Once again, this is a trend from 2021 that should soon become a regular practice. Designing a website or a mobile application by integrating an eco-design approach not only allows to optimize resources, but also closely links it to UX. Usability, performance, sobriety... Eco-design and UX tend to offer the user an efficient, fast and intuitive path. It is therefore interesting to look closely at the evolution of this UX trend in 2022.
2022 is a year that promises to be rich in innovations, ever more focused on the user and their comfort! In order to stay close to your audience, remember to stay informed and test different approaches. And if you fall short of perfection, Ferpection is always within your reach!
